Pooja played blind beggar in recently released Bala's Nenu Devudni and won accolades for her peformance. Off screen she looks stunning and charming. Born in Sri Lanka and brought up in Bangalore, this beauty talks about the response she is getting for Nenu Devudni and other things in this chitchat. She spoke to TC.com at Aryan Media office in Hyderabad.
So much praise is showering on you for your performance in Nenu Devudni.
Yes, I am on cloud nine. Appreciation coming from all quarters from media, movie folks and general audiences has put me on heavens. I didn’t expect such magnitude of positive talk for my role. But I give all the credit to Bala sir, my technicians - cinematographer Arthur Wilson, art director and makeup-artiste, and my co-artiste Arya. Actually they had put in lot of hard work for the movie.
Getting chance in a Bala’s film is like flight to fame!
Sure, but I didn’t expect such huge response for my role. I knew he takes best from an artiste, but I was not expecting such compliments.
How did you get role in Nenu Devudni?
I was not the original choice. The first heroine fell ill and she could not attend. So one day, I got call from Bala sir for audition. I attended it but I was not sure that I would be in it. When he finally cast me in, I had decided to not to do any film till it is finished as it is complicated film and requires the actors to be available anytime. The hard work has paid off.
What’s the best compliment so far?
Rajnikant’s sir. What can we more ask than getting a call from such a superstar?
How did you get chance in films?
My father is Mangalorean but my mother is from Sri Lanka. I am brought up in Bangalore. Once I was shopping in Bangalore, cameraman Late Jeeva found me and asked me to act in his film. It was sheer accident that I made my entry into films and did my first film in Tamil - Ullame Ketke but it was JJ with Madhavan that released first.
Will you make entry into Tollywood now?
Yes. In fact, I have been trying to make a debut. But I now feel to learn Telugu first before I sign a movie. I am well versed in Kannada so I am sure I can easily pick up the language, as the Telugu script is similar to Kannada.
What kind of roles you are expecting from Telugu.
I can do any role. Don’t have qualms in doing glam roles too.
Do you think people can accept you in a glam role after seeing in such a deglam character?
Why not? I did typical and standard heroine roles in Tamil. Nenu Devudni might change the perception but audiences can accept any actor who experiments. They are real gods.
Your preferred choice - glam roles or performance oriented ones?
Both. Try to mix both of them.
Which Telugu movie you liked or dying to watch?
I have been trying to catch Happy Days for a longtime. I picked up a DVD in Bangalore but it was pirated one so I didn’t want to watch it. I am just going to buy the DVD it in Hyderabad now on my way to airport.
Who is your favorite actress?
Juhi Chawla is all time favorite. I love her simplicity. In South India, it is Simran. Also like Asin too, as I worked with her.
Best friends in film industry
Namitha.
What’s brewing between you and Arya?
Nothing. Honestly saying we are not lovers nor are we seeing each other. Although we did four films together in Tamil, we are not into it. We are good friends. May be producers created such rumors to sell the film.
All the four films happened just accidental?
Yes. Probably the directors thought that I suit the role, they cast me in but it is not that Arya suggested me taking in.
