Mallika Sherawat is a well known Indian actress and a model. Originally known as Reema Lamba, she was born in the region of Karnal in the state of Haryana in India. She hails from a ‘jat’ family that is based in the countryside. Her birth date is October 24 in the year 1981. She studied in a Hindi medium school. Her public openness as well as her bold attitude has often made her the cynosure of the media and also won her a huge fan following. It goes that before making her entry into the world of films, she worked as a part time air hostess. It is around this point of time that she fell in love and got married to a Jet Airways pilot named Karan Singh Gill. But unfortunately, the marital bliss did not last long and the duo got legally separated after a certain point of time. When the pretty lady stepped into the glamour world, she did not keep her birth name Reema Lamba but instead changed it to Mallika Sherawat. According to the actress, the screen name of "Mallika", (meaning "empress") was adopted in order to keep away from any confusion with other actresses bearing the similar name of Reema. Her surname "Sherawat" is actually her mother's maiden name. Mallika herself says that she uses her mother's maiden name beside her screen name “Mallika” because her mother had provided her with the maximum support in her life. Mallika Sherawat has also a degree in philosophy from Miranda House, Delhi University. Mallika's first brush with the screen was in Lak Tunoo, a music video directed by Surjit Bindrakhia. Her debut film was Jeena Sirf Mere Liye (2002), also starring Tusshar Kapoor and Kareena Kapoor. In this film she did a special appearance as the character Sonia. But she came to the limelight with her courageous and controversial role in the film Khwahish (2003), where she worked opposite actor Himanshu Mallick. The movie Khwahish deals with a naturalistic, true to life topic. Mallika plays the role of Lekha Khorzuvekar, a frank and simple girl who is the daughter of a poor chicken farmer. Lekha meets Amar (a rich, stubborn boy, played by Himanshu) and both of them fall in love with each other. They decide to get married but Amar’s father is dead against this marriage. He wants his son to pursue further studies and not get married at such an early age. Amar defies his family and marries Lekha, thus breaking all contacts with his father. The couple shifts to a new home and starts their own family. After a period of content and happiness, Lekha is detected with blood cancer and the story then revolves around the couple coming into terms with this cruel reality.Unlike conventional Hindi films, this movie ends on a tragic note. The 2004 movie Murder written by Mahesh Bhatt and directed by Anurag Basu was one of the biggest commercial successes of the year. In this movie Mallika plays the lead role of a woman (Simran Saigal), who, bored out of a lonely life, turns to adultery and is mistakenly charged with the murder of her lover. The film co-starring Emraan Hashmi and Ashmit Patel is based on the Hollyood movie Unfaithful and the two Bollywood movies Hawas and Tezaab - The Acid of Love. [Mallika Sherawat] For her outstanding performance in this film Mallika Sherawat was nominated in the Best actress category at the Zee Cine Awards ceremony (2005). Another notable film, which again proved her as a powerful actress is Pyar ke Side Effects (2006), in which she plays the role of a girl named Trisha. Apart from Bollywood, she has also ventured into the Tamil film industry (otherwise known as Kollywood). She plays the role of Jasmine in the Tamil film Dasavatharam also starring Kamal Haasan, Asin and Jayapradha. She was much sought after by the media when she bagged a small but significant role in the foreign movie The Myth (previously titled ‘Time Breaker’), where she works with the famous Jackie Chan. The Myth is partly an adventure film which brings together historical elements and fiction. In this movie, the character Mallika essays is that of an Indian Princess. She also made an extensively publicized appearance at the Cannes Film Festival for the promotion of The Myth. Sherawat has captured a positon in the list featuring the names of Asia’s 100 most beautiful people by Cover, a fashion and beauty magazine based in Hong Kong.Apart from movies, Mallika Sherawat also has other achievements to her credit. Before joinning movies, Mallika had undertaken a number of modelling assignments, one of them being the advertisement of Santro in which she worked with the famous Bollywood actor Shah Rukh Khan. At the very young age of twenty one years, she appeared on the cover page of ‘Snoop’, an international magazine. She also appeared in the Indian edition of the ‘Cosmopolitan’.
