It was commercial films with their high-voltage dialogues, daredevil stunts and mesmerising jhatkas that catapulted Chiranjeevi to stardom. But on Monday he bid goodbye to potboilers for ever. Even if he wears the greasepaint again, it will be for short films or well-meaning movies with a socially useful message. “I don’t think I will act again in Tollywood pot-boilers,” said Chiranjeevi in an exclusive interview. “Several fans are asking me to act in films again. But, I have decided to bid adieu to my film career.” Even after taking the plunge into politics, Chiranjeevi had said that he would continue to act in films. But now he seems to have decided to become a full-time politician, disappointing lakhs of fans.
“I will continue my career as a politician to serve people with renewed vigour after the poll results,” he said. Chiranjeevi, who is relaxing in his posh house in Jubilee Hills, looks tanned after the gruelling campaign in the summer sun. He has also put on weight after eating different kinds of food at odd hours. Exuding confidence on the performance of his party in the polls, Chiranjeevi said he never once regretted the decision to give up acting for politics. “Though I toured the state and addressed road shows under scorching sun, I never felt unhappy,” he said. “The sight of people waving at me and vying with each other to shake my hands gave me enough energy.”He pointed out that even in Tollywood, he was not leading a rosy life away from the heat and dust. “I may be a star but I have worked for hours together under high voltage lights and reflectors for film shootings,” he said. “Like in politics, in film industry too I had to work hard to attain stardom. There were days when I worked round the clock for movies.”“For me, who worked like a machine in Tollywood, it is not difficult to cope with hostile situations in politics,” smiled Chiranjeevi. “I prepared mentally for all adverse situations before entering politics.” Chiranjeevi admitted that the egg hurling incident in Warangal had shaken him a bit. But it taught him that politics meant receiving bouquets and brickbats. “I have put on weight,” he said. “I have asked Ram Charan Babu to bring fitness equipment and will start my workout from tomorrow.”
