NEW DELHI(PTI): The Indian film industry is set to witness more '3 Idiots' moments as its overall domestic box office collection in the next four years slated to touch a whopping Rs 13,000 crore.
According to a report by PricewaterhouseCoopers, the industry's revenues from domestic screenings across the country, which stood at a total Rs 8,130 crore in 2008, is slated to grow at a compounded rate of 10 per cent.
"Domestic box office collections are projected to increase to Rs 13,000 crore by the year 2013. This growth is primarily attributable to the growth in average ticket price," the report said.
With the projected increase in the domestic box office collection, the size of film industry, which was at Rs 10,700 crore, is estimated to grow at a rate of 11.5 per cent in the 2008-13 period, it said.
The projection comes on the heels of Aamir Khan-starrer '3 Idiots' creating record by raking in almost Rs 200 crore in domestic screenings within 10 days of release, and is still counting. It had broken the earlier record of about Rs 190 crore held by Ghajini last year.
As for the cinegoers, watching movies are going to get even more expensive in the coming years. The average ticket prices across the country are projected to increase to Rs 40 by 2013 from Rs 25 in 2008, the report added.
The industry, however, will face an incredible challenge from piracy, specially the online thefts. A study undertaken by Motion Picture Distributors Association (India) has put the country among the top ten countries where online piracy is at its highest, where sharing of networks is the most common.
"For instance, Vishal Bharadwaj's 'Kaminey' was downloaded a record number of times (estimated at 350,000) in India and abroad," the report said.
The situation is equally bad for regional language film with 88 per cent of Telugu and 80 per cent of Tamil films being downloaded from the Internet, it added.
The total domestic box-office collections from regional films in India are estimated to be about Rs 1,508 crore, the report said.
